About this vaporizer
The Volcano Classic from Storz & Bickel is a medically certified desktop vaporizer that has been the industry standard for pure convection since 1996. The device uses a simple but proven balloon system to generate steam. After about 5 minutes of heating up to a maximum of 230°C, the steam is fed evenly into replaceable balloons. The analogue temperature control takes place via an intuitive rotary dial from 130 to 230°C - without digital electronics, but with maximum reliability. The pure convection heat protects the material and enables efficient extraction. The Volcano Classic water pipe adapter allows use with bongos or water pipes. The device works with replaceable dosing capsules, which increases hygiene and dosing accuracy. Storz & Bickel offers a 2-year guarantee. The Volcano Classic is aimed at users who value robustness, easy operation and proven technology. Compared to the newer Volcano Hybrid, the classic model does not have a hose (balloon system only) and digital temperature control.

The Volcano Classic is a desktop vaporizer by Storz & Bickel from Tuttlingen, Germany. On the market since 2000, it is regarded as one of the most durable and reliable vaporizers ever made. It uses pure convection heating and covers a temperature range of 130 to 230 degrees Celsius, adjustable via an analog dial with 9 marked positions.
The Classic is a purely electromechanical device with no digital electronics, no app, no Bluetooth, and no automatic shut-off. Controls are limited to a temperature dial and a rocker switch for the built-in pump. The package includes four EASY VALVE balloons, a filling chamber, an herb mill, and a cleaning kit. The recommended retail price is 398 euros.

Controls & Design
The Volcano Classic is a purely electromechanical device. There are no circuit boards, no software, no touchscreen. That is precisely what makes it so durable – what is not digital cannot crash or become obsolete.
Controls:
- Temperature dial – Stepless regulator with 9 numbered markings (approximately 130-230 degrees Celsius). The positions correspond to reference values, not exact degree readings.
- Heating LED – A green indicator light shows that the heater is active. It turns off when the set temperature is reached and lights up again during reheating.
- Pump rocker switch – Turns the built-in air pump on and off. Only needed for filling the balloon.
Design:
The iconic cone shape of the Volcano has remained virtually unchanged since 2000. The housing is made of heat-resistant plastic and stainless steel. The Classic weighs 1,600 grams with dimensions of 20.0 x 18.0 x 20.0 cm. The fixed power cable is attached directly to the device.
Available colors: Onyx (black), Silver, 25 Years Edition (anniversary model), and Evergreen (green).

Temperature & Heating System
The Volcano Classic uses pure convection. The built-in pump pushes air through the heating block, where it is heated to the set temperature. The hot air then flows through the filling chamber and extracts the active compounds from the plant material.
Temperature range:
The dial covers a range of approximately 130 to 230 degrees Celsius. The 9 markings on the scale are orientation values – there is no precise digital display. For beginners, position 5 to 6 is recommended, which corresponds to roughly 175 to 190 degrees Celsius.
Heat-up time:
At a medium setting (around 180 degrees Celsius), the Classic needs approximately 5 minutes to heat up. That is considerably longer than the Volcano Hybrid (40 seconds), but this is due to the purely analog heating technology without electronic regulation. The green LED turns off once the temperature is reached.
No auto shut-off: The Classic has no timer and does not turn off automatically. After use, the device must be manually disconnected from the power supply.

EASY VALVE Balloon System
The Volcano Classic works exclusively with the EASY VALVE balloon system. Unlike the Volcano Hybrid, there is no tube option – inhalation always happens through the balloon.
How it works:
- Grind plant material in the herb mill and place it in the filling chamber
- Place the filling chamber on the hot air generator and turn clockwise until it stops
- Set the temperature with the dial and wait until the green LED turns off
- Place the EASY VALVE balloon on the filling chamber
- Turn on the pump – hot air flows through the filling chamber into the balloon
- When the balloon is filled: turn off the pump, remove the balloon
- Press the mouthpiece into the valve and inhale slowly
Advantages of the balloon system:
- No draw resistance – The pump actively pushes vapor into the balloon. When inhaling from the balloon, resistance is practically zero.
- Mobility – The filled balloon can be detached from the device and moved freely. Inhalation is independent of the power source.
- Safety – You inhale from the detached balloon, not directly from the hot device.
Tip: Only fill the balloon with as much vapor as you will use within 10 minutes. Vapor condenses on the balloon wall after a few hours.

Using concentrates:
Storz & Bickel offers Liquid Pads for concentrates. The pad goes into the filling chamber, the concentrate is spread on top. Without the pad, the material would drip through the screens and foul the chamber.
Dial position 5 to 6 (roughly 175-190 degrees Celsius) works well. Fill the balloon as normal. Vapor production is a bit lower than with plant material, but the flavor comes through more intensely. A set of 8 Liquid Pads costs about 10 euros.

Cleaning & Maintenance
The filling chamber of the Volcano Classic can be disassembled and cleaned in a few steps. All removable parts are dishwasher safe or can be soaked in isopropyl alcohol.
Regular cleaning:
- Screens – Brush off with the included cleaning brush after each use. For heavier buildup, soak in isopropyl alcohol (maximum 30 minutes).
- Filling chamber – Push the filling chamber cylinder upward out of the housing. Clean all parts with warm soapy water or in the dishwasher.
- Cap ring and screens – Pull off the cap ring, push out the screen with the brush handle. Soak in isopropyl alcohol, then rinse for at least one minute under running water.
Hot air generator:
Clean the hot air generator itself only with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Never immerse it in water. The air filter on the bottom should be checked for contamination every four weeks and replaced as needed. A set of replacement filters is included in the box.
Plastic parts: Do not soak in isopropyl alcohol for longer than 30 minutes to avoid discoloration or embrittlement.

Wear parts & replacement costs:
- EASY VALVE balloons — 5-pack around 30 euros. Replace when the balloon turns milky or gets sticky. Roughly every 50 to 100 fills depending on use.
- Screens (30 mm) — Normal Screen Set for about 6 euros. Swap when permanently clogged despite cleaning.
- Air filter — Included in the box. Check every 3 to 6 months, replace when dirty.
- Filling chamber clips — Hold the screen in place. Rarely break, inexpensive to replace if they do.
All parts are available from the Storz & Bickel online store. Overall, the Classic needs very few consumables — the balloons are the main recurring cost.
Temperature Settings
Choosing the right temperature on the Volcano Classic determines flavor, vapor density, and active compound profile. Lower temperatures (170–185 °C) emphasize terpenes and deliver mild, aromatic vapor. Higher temperatures (195–210 °C) produce thicker clouds and stronger effects.
Temperature Zones
| Zone | Range | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Flavor | 170–185 °C | Mild, aromatic, light vapor |
| Balanced | 185–195 °C | Good flavor with visible vapor |
| Dense clouds | 195–210 °C | Thick vapor, stronger effects |
Practical Tips
- Start at 180 °C and increase in 5-degree steps
- Finer grind often needs 5–10 °C lower temperature
- In cold environments, raise starting temp by 5 °C
Battery & Charging
The Volcano Classic battery lasts several sessions with typical use. For maximum lifespan, keep the battery between 20% and 80% and avoid deep discharge. USB-C charging with a quality power adapter speeds up charging.
Battery Tips
- Do not leave on the charger permanently — unplug after 100%
- For replaceable batteries: use original or recommended cells
- Battery performance drops in cold — let it warm up before sessions
- Pass-through charging (if supported) allows use while charging
